Prerequisites: A grade of “C” or better in Math 1100 or a
valid “Permit for Math Enrollment” form.
See prerequisite verification procedure attached to this handout. Note
that test scores on the math department placement test are only valid for one year
from the test date.
Class Meets: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
from 8:00-9:50 am in GAB 104 and FRIDAY 8/8/03.
Textbook College Mathematics, Ninth
Edition, Barnett, Ziegler, Byleen
and Notes: Class Notes, you will also be
required to obtain a copy of the class notes (see below).
Class Notes: Class Notes are available for purchase in
the copy centers. You will NOT have time to copy everything from the overhead
without them. Therefore, they will be REQUIRED material for the class. The cost
for these notes should be less than $15. The copy centers are in University
Union 2nd floor and Kendall Hall 178. You should bring these to
every class. However, you can NOT just rely on the notes. They are designed to
complement class and your book. You will need them by the next class period.
Supplies: A graphing calculator that will
handle matrix manipulations is required.
I use a TI 83 so its use will be supported in class. TI 89’s, TI 92’s or any other utilities with
alphanumeric capabilities ARE NOT permitted. You will NOT be allowed to share
calculators during a test. There are a limited number of graphing calculators
available for short term (a few hours at a time – not overnight) use from the
math department for a VERY nominal fee (a quarter per use at last check).
Daily Grades: Homework and quizzes are considered as daily
grades.
Quizzes may or may not be announced ahead of
time. They may be given at any time during class. If you are not in class at
the time that the quiz is given, you will receive a grade of zero for that
quiz. These quizzes will be timed.
Your homework problems are later in the
syllabus. The problems are assigned on the day that we complete that section
of material in class and are due at the beginning of the following class
period. Homework should be placed in the appropriate stack on my
desk as you enter the room. Homework for that day will only be accepted during
the first 10 minutes of class. NO LATE HOMEWORK will be accepted (even if you
are absent, late to class, have a good excuse, have a university excused
absence, etc.). A grade of zero will be assigned to any homework assignments
not received within the first 10 minutes of class on the day that it is due. Each
section of homework will count as a separate grade (even if multiple sections
are turned in on the same day). EACH
SECTION OF HOMEWORK SHOULD BE STAPLED AND TURNED IN SEPARATELY even when
multiple assignments are due the same day. Four daily grades throughout the
semester will be dropped. I suggest that you save these dropped grades for
illnesses/unforeseen emergency situations!!! If you know that you will not be
in class in time to turn in an assignment, you may turn it in EARLY to my
office (there is a folder near my door with my name on it) or my box in the
math office (GAB 435) before 7:45 am on the day that it is due.
Exams: Two regular exams and a final are scheduled for this semester. The tentative test dates are:
Exam 1 – (Sections 1.3, 1.4, 8.3-8.7 and 8.1 and 8.2 to the extent covered in class and the notes, 9.2, 9.3 and 9.5) Thursday 7/17/03
Exam 2 – (Sections 6.1-6.7, 3.1-3.4 and related assignments, and 2.2 and 2.3 to the extent covered in class and the notes) Wednesday 7/30/03
Final Exam (Comprehensive with emphasis on the material that has not yet been tested) FRIDAY 8/8/03
o HATS or CAPS may NOT be worn during exams.
o Sharing of calculators or other materials is not allowed during exams.
o Only approved calculators are allowed during exams. It is YOUR responsibility to know how to work the calculator that you bring to the test.
Final Exam: The final exam is FRIDAY, 8/8/03 at 8:00
am in this room.
Make-up EACH
TEST MUST BE TAKEN AT THE DESIGNATED TIME. Test
Policy: times are not
negotiable. A test may be taken prior to the scheduled date
provided
that the student provides a
written request at least one week prior to the date in which s/he chooses to
take a test. In the event of a schedule
conflict with a university function, dental/physician’s appointment, wedding,
formal, or whatever, the student must
take the test early.
If a test is missed, the student must contact me within 24 hours of the scheduled test time. E-mail is the quickest way to reach me.
Failure to do so will result in a zero for that test. WITHOUT A VALID, VERIFIABLE EXCUSE, THE
HIGHEST POSSIBLE SCORE ON A MAKE-UP TEST WILL BE A 70. Hospitalization of the
student, death of a close relative, and orders of a doctor would be considered
valid excuses. Most other things (car trouble, sleeping through the test, not
feeling your best, schedule conflict) would NOT.
Evaluation: Exam 1 25%
Exam 2 25%
Daily Grades 20%
Final Exam 30%
Grading: A: [90%,100%] B: [80%,90%) C: [70%,80%)
D: [60%,70%) F: [0%,60%)
Final Grades will be posted online by the university at: http://www.unt.edu/grades
Attendance: Class attendance is mandatory. Students are responsible for all information given in class, regardless of attendance. Remember, homework is due the period following the completion of that section in class. It is your responsibility to know what sections are due. It would be a good idea to have email addresses / phone numbers from multiple sources so that you can obtain this information in case of an emergency. If all else fails, assume that we completed the next 3 sections of material.
Class room etiquette: Please
be considerate of your classmates by avoiding disruptive behavior. Please
arrive promptly, and do not leave until the scheduled ending time of the class.
If you must arrive late or leave early, please take a seat near the door. Turn
off all electronic devices such as beepers, cell phones, etc.
Drop Policy: If the student is unable to complete this
course, it is his/her responsibility to formally withdraw from the course. The student may do so through the
Registrar’s Office after obtaining the necessary signatures. Consents for
withdrawal may be obtained in the Math Department Office, GAB 435. The last day
to drop a class with “W” or “WF” is 7/30/03.
“WF” is averaged into your GPA as an “F.” If the student does not properly withdraw from the course but
stops attending, s/he will receive a performance grade, usually an F.
Statement regarding disabled students:
It is the responsibility of the student with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate documentation from the office of the Dean of Students.
Recommended Keys to Success:
Have
the proper background for this class.
If
you don’t understand, ask.
Complete
your homework promptly.
Read
the textbook material to be covered in class, before class.
Use the Math Lab, GAB 440 and other tutorials offered on campus.
Get
help IMMEDIATELY when topics are confusing to you.
Math
Lab: MATH LAB WEB SITE: www.math.unt.edu/mathlab
The math lab is a great place to get help with class
material and homework.
Electronic access for

Academic Dishonesty: No cheating will be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating will receive an F for the course. Furthermore, a letter will be sent to the appropriate dean. I expect no cheating in this class. Working with your classmates on homework is NOT considered cheating, but copying answers or work from any source (classmates, tutors, solution guides, etc.) is considered cheating. Of course, giving or receiving any unauthorized aid on exams would be considered cheating.
See http://www.unt.edu/planning/UNT_Policy/volume3/18_1_11.html for more information.
Students are responsible for
meeting all university deadlines. See the printed Schedule of Classes or
University Catalog for details.
This syllabus (including the
test dates) is subject to change as the instructor deems necessary. Any changes
will be announced during regular class time. It is the responsibility of the
students to learn of these changes.
Homework Instructions for Math 1400 Summer II 2003
·
Please
treat each section as a separate homework assignment (even if multiple
sections are due in the same class period).
·
Please
STAPLE (not fold or paper clip) the pages together if you have multiple
pages in the same section.
·
Each
homework section should be clearly labeled with your NAME, CLASS SECTION
NUMBER (i.e. Math 1400.100), and HOMEWORK SECTION NUMBER (i.e.
Section 3.1). Please PRINT this
information in the UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER of each page so that the grader can
easily read it. If you have multiple
pages, they should be stapled together.
Graders have the discretion to deduct points from your homework grade if
your assignment is not labeled properly and stapled.
· If your name is not written on the homework assignment, you will not receive credit for turning it in.
·
You
should use notebook or typing paper (no spiral edges) for homework assignments.
·
Each
problem should be labeled clearly with problem and section number in the left
hand column. The answer should be clearly indicated. Box your answer when it is
appropriate. YOU MUST SHOW ALL WORK FOR FULL CREDIT. All work must be
neat, legible, and orderly. Graders have the discretion to deduct points from
your homework grade for sloppy or difficult-to-read work.
· NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out which sections were finished. You should exchange phone numbers or email addresses with several members of your class so that you have multiple sources of information in case of emergency.
· All concepts covered in the course are fair game for exam questions. However, I plan to concentrate on problems similar to the assigned problems and those worked in class.
